FBI To Divert Anti-Terror Resources To Mainstream Pornography

You've got to be kidding me.

From making a big deal of Janet Jackson's boob to this, the Religious Right in this country has finally gone completely nuts.  Instead of using precious investigative resources to fighting potential terrorism within our borders, the FBI has been ordered, according to a Barton Gellman WaPo article, to:

divert eight agents, a supervisor and assorted support staff to gather evidence against "manufacturers and purveyors" of pornography -- not the kind exploiting children, but the kind that depicts, and is marketed to, consenting adults.

-More on the flip-

"I guess this means we've won the war on terror," said one exasperated FBI agent, speaking on the condition of anonymity because poking fun at headquarters is not regarded as career-enhancing. "We must not need any more resources for espionage."

This is another example, in this era of unprecedented deficit spending by our government, of how the Bush Administration is using its resources in ways that exhibit a strange set of priorities.  But it is consistent.  Just as the administration's beloved Patriot Act weakened our protections under the Constitution, this type of action against mainstream pornography threatens to further weaken First Amendment protections given to us by the Founding Fathers in the Bill of Rights.

Isn't there some way we can fast-forward to 2008?  The Bushies just keep getting worse and worse in their attacks against our freedom and our civil liberties.
